South Africa Mthimkhulu Bookfeeding

The Mthimkhulu Bookfeeding Project is our newest still in-progress library in South Africa, located in the heart of Kleinmond, which will have its official opening in March 2025. Kleinmond is a coastal town known for its beautiful landscapes but also faces significant economic inequalities. The Mthimkhulu Village Centre, a community-driven NGO operating under the Grail Centre Trust, plays a vital role in supporting underprivileged families through educational programs, community health initiatives, youth development, and a community food garden.

Despite these efforts, the community still struggles with high illiteracy rates, especially among children from low-income backgrounds. Many children lack access to books, and existing educational facilities are often overcrowded, with a shortage of teachers and resources. Parents expressed concern that their children do not have safe and supportive spaces to develop reading skills, and the existing public library is too far and difficult to access. Recognizing these challenges, the community reached out to us, asking if a library could be the next step in their journey towards education and empowerment. Community library would be a crucial addition. It will serve as a safe space where children can access books, develop literacy skills, and participate in engaging activities such as storytelling and book discussions.

This approach will provide a comfortable and welcoming space for children aged 2 to 15, helping them develop a love for reading and a brighter future.

This library received majority its books as donations from schools and libraries in Cape Town area. Thank you!
